About Coins And Currency...

Did You Know?

  • The word for one who collects coins is numismatist.
  • The book many U.S. coin collectors use as a reference is The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of United States Coins 2009, by R.S. Yeoman.  Most collectors simply refer to it as The Red Book.
  • The condition of a coin makes a huge difference in it's value.  For example, a 1927 'S' quarter in good condition is worth about $35.00.  If it grades 'XF' (Extremely Fine) it could be worth close to $750.00.
  • 1964 is the last year the U.S. Mints made dimes, quarters and half dollars that were 90% silver.
  • The only coin the U.S. ever minted that was magnetic was the 1943 Lincoln cent.  They are zinc coated steel.
  • The first U.S. coin to bear the inscription"In God We Trust" was the 2 cent piece (1864).

Tom not only appraises coins, but has helped hundreds of people sell their collections.
